Description of the Project

The Historia literaria is an important epoche-transgressing medium for self-communication of the 17th and 18th republic of scolars which served the opening up, order, storage and communication of knowledge [‘Wissen’]. The declared goal was to depict the origin and progress of scholarship from its beginnings to the present. Thus, the knowledge of the past should be preserved and the access to the sciences made easier for propaedeutic purposes. This led to new orders of knowledge which were supposed to be adequate to solve the problems of disparity. These problems arose because of competing theoretical approaches and forms of education and because of the sheer mass of bequathed knowledge.

The polymorphic forms of the Historia literaria and its diverse functions are examined in our project. These forms and functions emerged between 1650 and 1800 out of the ambition to reduce the existing pluralty by establishing new hirarchies.
